The Green Steel Certification Portal is a pioneering initiative led by the National Institute of Secondary Steel Technology (NISST) under the Ministry of Steel, Government of India. This portal serves as the national interface for implementing India’s Green Steel Taxonomy — a landmark step toward decarbonising the steel industry in alignment with India’s climate commitments and global sustainability goals.

Launched on December 12, 2024, the Green Steel Taxonomy positions India as the first country to define and classify steel based on carbon emission intensity. This step reaffirms India’s commitment to innovation-led climate action. NISST serves as the nodal agency for a structured certification framework covering registration, MRV, and reporting—delivered through a single-window digital platform.

Green Steel refers to steel manufactured with lower CO₂ emissions than conventional methods.
This is achieved through innovative practices like using low-carbon inputs, energy/resource efficiency, renewable energy, green hydrogen, and recycling. The goal is to reduce CO₂ per tonne of finished steel, driving a sustainable industrial future.
